Band, DJ, or Wedding Singer? - Choosing the right music for Your Wedding!
I am a singer, musician, & DJ; with experience performing in, and fronting, live bands. I provide a specific type of music for weddings and events. So, perhaps knowing "why I chose this path" will help you choose the right music for your wedding.
BANDS: There is really nothing like the energy that a live band can bring to your wedding. But there are potential drawbacks and it has been said that most people opting for a live band wish they had made a different choice. "Why?" Expense, volume control; lack of variety; potential errors; and music that might not be quite as danceable as other options. Many bands are also limited to a certain genre or style of music which might not appeal widely enough to your guests.
DJs: This option improves variety & danceability (perfect BPMs for dancing) but has some drawbacks as well. “What drawbacks?” A wedding is not a club and so this is not the ideal venue for DJ skills. Instead, the best delivery of music at a wedding is a 'set list' with songs played in sequence, which is nice but maybe not as exciting as seeing someone perform live. However, the music should provide enough variation for attendees and is therefore, in my opinion, usually preferable to a live band; but it does lack the personal vibe and energy that only live music can deliver.
WEDDING SINGER: What I've elected to do, as a professional singer, is to sing live vocals to professional backing tracks; and to supplement with DJ music as required. "Why?" As a singer, my job is the same as it would be if I were fronting a band; but now my band never makes a mistake and I can sing a variety of music from Frank Sinatra to The Rolling Stones. Since it includes a live music component, the vibe is not dissimilar to a live band and volume control is a piece of cake. People inherently like to see the skill set of a live performer as it increases the emotional experience; whether it is a band, singer, actor, or athlete. DJ skills that might be admired in Ibiza have no place at a wedding. Which is why, in my opinion, a wedding singer is preferable to a DJ. One drawback to a wedding singer is that singers tend to sing the music that they know best, which is therefore usually limited to the span of a few decades. I primarily sing vintage music from the 1950's to 1980's, with the occasional exception. I recognize that this is a niche audience; but I'd like to think that if attendees appreciate those vintages the most, then I will always be the right choice for that wedding or event. CONSIDERATIONS: How many attendees; what ages; and what $ will your budget allow? If your group is all rockers, and your
budget is large - hire a band. If you are in your 20’s – consider a DJ; or, if you are adventurous and looking for a vintage music experience then please consider my services. If you have a specific vintage of music that you think would be
most appreciated by you & your guests, consider hiring a wedding singer that specializes in that vintage.
Wishing you a wonderful wedding day and life together; filled with joy, music, and laughter!
